토토 어플 SK Eneroot begins first commercial operation of hydrogen fuel cell power plant ‘Ulsan Hydrogen Power Unit 2’

토토 어플 SK Eneroot, a joint venture between 토토 어플 Chemical, SK Gas, and Air Liquide Korea, has launched the commercial operation of its first hydrogen fuel cell power plant. On the 25th, 토토 어플 SK Eneroot announced the full-scale commercial operation of the 20MW hydrogen fuel cell power plant, "Ulsan Hydrogen Power Unit 2."

Located within Lotte Chemical’s Ulsan plant in Nam-gu, Ulsan Metropolitan City, Ulsan Hydrogen Power Unit 2 was finally selected as an operator during the first half of 2023 when Korea introduced its general hydrogen power bidding market for the first time. Construction began in March of that year, and by May, the Company successfully secured project financing (PF) worth approximately KRW 77.2 billion. After completing trial operations, the plant has now entered full commercial operation.

Ulsan Hydrogen Power Unit 2 has secured stable supply of by-product hydrogen from 토토 어플's chemical affiliates and SK Gas subsidiaries and plans to produce about 160GWh of electricity annually for the next 20 years from the start of commercial operation. This amount of energy is enough to power approximately 40,000 four-person households for a year. The plant is expected to provide a stable supply of eco-friendly electricity to Ulsan, a region with high industrial power demand.

What sets 토토 어플 SK Eneroot’s hydrogen fuel cell plant apart is that it adopts a hydrogen-exclusive model that emits zero carbon, unlike other power plants. This allows for a seamless transition to clean hydrogen in the future without the need for additional facility modifications or upgrades. Moreover, by recycling waste heat generated from the fuel cells to produce additional electricity, the plant improves energy efficiency and contributes to greenhouse gas reduction—strengthening its role as a next-generation eco-friendly power source. In addition, the project is expected to bring various positive ripple effects, including the expansion of decentralized power supply in the Ulsan region, increased tax revenue, and direct and indirect job creation.

Since its establishment in September 2022, 토토 어플 SK Eneroot has continued to take strategic steps to expand Korea’s hydrogen industry. Starting with the commercial operation of Ulsan Hydrogen Power Unit 2, a total of four hydrogen fuel cell power plants are scheduled to begin commercial operation in phases by November next year, bringing the cumulative operating capacity to 80MW.
